Conservation

Our main goal is to conserve our marine life and provide information to ensure that the future generations will be able to join the same stunning marine life of Mozambique that we are now seeing.

We often participate in Governmental and Non-Governmental meetings to share what we have learnt and contribute to several projects linked with conservation.

We are currently working together with other organizations such as the Eyes on the Horizon, AMAR and ALMA to include manta rays and whale sharks as protected species in the Mozambique wildlife and/or fisheries law.

The Mozambique Government is now starting a process to create a Marine Protected Area to safeguard the population of manta rays and whale sharks in Inhambane Province. We are putting much effort into this process. We hope that our data will assist decision-makers to also include Zavora Beach in the proposed protected area.

Zavora, has limited development and is one of the biggest hotspots for manta rays sighting in southern Mozambique.

Our research shows that from March to December 2010 we had 81.2% Sighting Sucess for manta on our shallow reefs. The protection of this area is essential to avoid the problem caused by uncontrolled development.
